Japan is an island country of East Asia made up of over 6800 islands. The four largest islands Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu attract tourists from all over the world with their diversity and abundance of natural attractions. Japan is the third largest economy in the world with a nominal GDP od 5.6 trillion American dollars. The great hard work of the population is the reason of the rapid development of Japanese industry. This final assignment seeks to explain the importance of tourism for Japan through natural attractions and cultural tourism. By describing the natural and socio-geographical features and defining the most important tourist sites, the assignment tries to explain the importance they have for tourism and development opportunities in Japan. The characteristics of tourism in the study area are described through four regions or the four largest islands, which are characterized by different geographical features and diverse offer. In recent years, Japan has focused on increasing the number of tourist arrivals by easing travel visa requirements. This move proved to be very positive due to the growing number of tourist arrivals. With its continuous tourist growth until the appearance of Covid-19, Japan confirmed its visibly increased recognition as a tourist entity on the world market. In order to achieve a future increase in tourist demand, focus is needed on sustainable and epidemiologically responsible tourism during Covid-19 crisis. Larger number of tourist arrivals from 2019 can be achieved by ending the pandemic better promotion of the destination on the international market and better understanding of the tourist offer by potential tourists is needed.
